Winter Hair Care Tips

When we think of the winter, we think of holidays and cold weather. We may have to deal with snow or get bundled up to keep warm during this cold weather. But there is one thing many people don’t realize during this cold season. Our hair needs special care during winter. The cold affects the hair and scalp and negatively impacts it if nothing is done to provide support. There are a few winter hair care tips to follow to help protect your locks.

Humidifier

Moisture plays a vital role in how our hair looks and feels. During the winter, it is often very dry, especially indoors. Turning the heat on in the house can make it a toasty but dangerously dry environment. A humidifier can help keep the moisture in the house.

Wash Less

Especially during these winter months, it is essential to spread out hair washing. Using water is fine, but shampoos remove natural oils on the scalp and hair that can dry it out. Twice a week should be sufficient for shampoo hair cleaning during winter.

Hair Mask

Applying a natural hair conditioning mask can help keep the hair and scalp moist and enriched to stay soft and keep its shine. Using egg yolk and honey once a week on hair will do the trick. Egg provides peptides that stimulate growth and act as a conditioner, while honey contains amino acids and vitamins to enrich the hair.

Air Dry

Hot tools can dry out your hair. During the winter, try skipping the hot straighteners and blow dryers. Instead, use microfiber towels or air dry your locks to keep in the moisture.

Conditioner

Use a condition frequently during the winter. The proper conditioner will have natural oils that can help enrich the hair and keep it from drying out. These conditioners should include shea butter, coconut, and olive oil in their ingredients. These same nourishing oils can be used for a hot oil scalp massage, preventing drying out, irritation and flaking.

Plan Accordingly

Wet hair does not enjoy the cold, and the cold air makes the hair shafts expand, which can cause the color to fade or even shaft breakage. Even though you’re not using a blow dryer, take the time to dry your hair thoroughly before heading out.

Once the hair is dried, it is best to cover it up before heading out into the cold. Protecting the hair from the wind and cold will help keep it from getting stressed. Use a hat or scarf to stay warm and find a way to help prevent static. When using a head covering, a satin cloth or static spray can be used to help prevent static. Hair will be extra frizzy due to static and the lack of moisture during winter. Microfiber towels are one way to help reduce static when drying hair.

Skip The Hot Shower

A hot shower will be tempting during the cold month, and the problem is that the hot water can strip the hair of oils. Lukewarm water should be used when washing hair. At the end of the shower, cold water should briefly be used to seal hair cuticles.
